Hiking Headquarters Trail

This paved trail is about 0.25 miles and loops around the small Spring Creek pond. There is also a short spur to a small bluff that overlooks the Little Pend Oreille River and the valley that the river runs through.

Look for many species of song birds along with the resident bald eagles who call this valley home.

Other activities include the new auto tour. Most interpretive signs can be viewed from the road and trails listed above are located along the auto tour.

WTA Pro Tip: Save a copy of our directions before you leave! App-based driving directions aren't always accurate and data connections may be unreliable as you drive to the trailhead.

Getting There

From Colville: From Main Street, follow Third Avenue (Highway 20) for 6 miles east toward Tiger. A sign at the intersection of Main and Third marks “Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge 13 miles.” Just after passing White Mud Lake, make a right turn onto Artman-Gibson Road and look for a sign stating that the Refuge is 7 miles away. Travel 1.7 miles until reaching a 4-way intersection. Turn left onto Kitt-Narcisse Road and follow it for 2.2 miles where the road forks. Take the right fork onto Bear Creek Road (a dirt road), and follow it for 3.3 miles. The Refuge headquarters is a brown log building. ADA-accessible toilets available here.
