Start at the Obstruction Point Trailhead. This trailhead is at the end of a dirt road that starts just short of the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center. The road is narrow with a steep drop off on one side, so take it slow and be courteous to oncoming traffic.
The Grand Valley Loop is a great option, combining a ridge walk with sections along both Grand Creek Valley and Badger Valley. It can be hiked in either direction. This guide describes a counterclockwise route.
Start out on the Grand Pass Trail for 1.6 miles as it stays pretty level along the ridge. At this first junction, you have the option of heading right on Lillian Ridge Way, a trail that continues along the ridge before dropping down into the valley. We’ll stay left on the Grand Pass Trail, which quickly starts to descend, bottoming out at Grand Lake after 2 miles. Just before the lake you’ll come to another intersection where you’ll want to stay left.
Enjoy your time at the lake, exploring on a spur trail that parallels the southern shore, or following its western shore on the Badger Valley Trail. The area around the lake is a sort of nexus for other explorations in the area. Head south and you’ll hit Moose Lake, then Gladys Lake, all within a mile. Just south of Gladys Lake is where Lillian Ridge Way connects with the Grand Pass Trail, if you opt for that option. If you are spending the night, campsites at these three lakes will make a good home for the night, just be sure to get the appropriate permits beforehand.
To complete the loop, stay on the Badger Valley Trail which heads north from Grand Lake before turning left and following Badger Valley back to the trailhead over the course of 4.1 miles from Grand Lake.
Another short loop can be added here at the end if you want some more miles. About 1.2 miles before you return to the trailhead you’ll come to an intersection with the Elk Mountain Trail. This trail ascends to the ridge over the course of 1.3 miles where you can hang a left on the Deer Ridge Trail, which follows along this ridge back to the trailhead. This additional loop will add 2.2 miles to your trip.
With so many options and variations, this area is a great place to plan the perfect trip for you.
