Hiking Goat Flats

Goat Flats is the last of the non-technical approach to Three Fingers Lookout. It requires an 8-mile road walk, then 4.5 miles of hiking on true trail. The area is lovely, but bear bins are recommended for overnighters, to protect your food from the animals who live here.

WTA Pro Tip: Save a copy of our directions before you leave! App-based driving directions aren't always accurate and data connections may be unreliable as you drive to the trailhead.

Getting There

Drive the Mountain Loop Highway (92) to milepost 7 at the top of the hill and look for two large telephone poles set close together on the left. These mark the turn onto FS Road 41. Turn onto it, and stay on the main road uphill. Three roads leave 92 at this point, but two are private. FS 41 is the eastmost of the three. The sign for FS 41 is about 100 feet down the road. (NOTE: At mile 8, FR 41 is officially closed to all motorized traffic due to road and bridge damage. Hike or bike to trailhead allowed.) Stay left as you pass several roads. Turn right onto FS 4160. At about 17.5 miles there will be a trailhead signed for Goat Flats.
