Gilbert Peak

Gilbert Peak, the highest in the Goat Rocks at 8184',

Head for the Klickton Divide and then get off the loop trail soon after passing the lake in a clockwise direction. Head up a few hundred feet southwest to a flat area with a tarn.

Once you are on the Divide the ridge is fairly easy to follow with Gilbert in view most of the time. The plateau-like arm right before the summit block offers wide views of snowfields and Mt. Adams looming above.

Turn the corner to get close to the summit block and avoid its cliffs. Just ahead of your lies a moderately steep snowfield that requires a careful traverse to a short boulder field. Be careful here, the best access point to the scramble is from where the boulder field runs into a short snow patch up to the buttress, almost in its middle. There is a notch where the summit can be gained on class 3 rock.

At the summit you'll find a geodetic marker and a crafted cross to a fallen mountaineer.

Be careful on the way back, too. Make a note of markers on the way up that you can remember coming back.
