Hiking Edith Creek Basin Snowshoe

Edith Creek Basin is a popular Mount Rainier snowshoeing area. The basin lies north of Paradise and connects to Panorama Point.

From the Paradise parking area head north into the snow. There are many winter trails in the area so a map and some routefinding skills will come in handy. Edith Creek Basin follows the course of Edith Creek, trending NNE from the Paradise parking area. The summer route of the Golden Gate Trail parallels the creek through this area.

Edith Creek basin is bordered by slopes that can pose avalanche danger so visitors here should have the skills to assess and avoid such terrain if necessary. The basin is a relatively open area and with its proximity to Paradise it makes a fairly low-key snowshoe outing, but if you’re looking for a more challenging destination, consider continuing on to Panorama Point if the avalanche conditions are favorable and you have the necessary skills.

Getting There

This snowshoeing route leaves from the Paradise parking area at Mount Rainier National Park. During the winter vehicle access is limited so the only way to enter the park is through the southwest Nisqually Entrance along Highway 706 east of the town of Ashford. From the park entrance continue on Paradise Road for about 17.5 miles to the Paradise parking area.

Note: Once in the national park, the stretch of road between Longmire and Paradise has limited access during the winter depending on conditions. Check with Mount Rainier National Park to see if this portion of the road is open before heading out.
