Hiking East Fork Foss River Snowshoe

This snowshoe route starts off with a roadwalk, then carries on through the East Fork Foss River Valley on the Necklace Valley Trail.

Starting from the end of the plowed portion of Forest Road 68 where you’ll park, walk south on snow-covered Forest Road 68. During the snowiest months the road is plowed to just past the railroad trestle. After completing the roadwalk portion you’ll arrive at the Necklace Valley Trail, which you’ll be on for the rest of the route.

From here the trail stays east of the River as it follows the valley bottom. Depending on recent snowfall, there may or may not be a packed trail to follow through the snowy forest. Be prepared to make your own trail and navigate up the valley bottom.

After about 5 miles on the Necklace Valley Trail, the way crosses the East Fork Foss River on a bridge. This makes a good turnaround point for most snowshoers. Up to this point the route has travelled through relatively safe avalanche terrain, depending on conditions.

Only hikers with the skills needed to travel through avalanche terrain should continue past the bridge when snow is present.

Getting There

From Highway 2, half a mile east of the Skykomish Ranger Station, turn south on Foss River Road (Forest Road 68). Continue on this road for about 2.5 miles. Just after passing under the railroad trestle, reach the end of the plowed road and find a responsible place to park. Depending on the time of winter you may be able to drive farther up the road.
