Also known as the portal to the popular Dungeness Spit, there are many equestrian and hiker friendly trails here. Situated on the bluff above the Strait of Juan De Fuca, this area boasts 67 campsites in addition to the scenic, mile-long bluff trail and excellent birdwatching.
The bluff trail affords fantastic views of the Straits and Mount Baker, and since it's almost totally flat, it's a good option for those recuperating from an injury, hiking with kids, or even negotiating a stroller. Note that you may see equestrians in some places, and please do step aside to let the horses pass if you do see them.
The gate for Dungness Spit is to the northwest of the Recreation Area. There is a fee associated with visiting the Spit -- $3 for a group of up to four people -- a pretty good deal for a trail with up to 11 miles of hiking possible.
