Hiking Chopaka Lake

Chopaka Lake sits at the entrance to the Chopaka Mountain Wilderness Study Area, a 5,518-acre site owned and managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The lake, a fly fishing only area, is popular for fishing, but also features hiking trails. The entire area is extensive and extends all the way to the Canadian border.

Trails leave from the BLM managed campground and head off into the rest of the property. Many routes are unmaintained and may be hard to follow but offer access to the ridge above the Similkameen River Valley and the shores of Bowers Lake.

Cattle may be present in parts of this property, but also keep an eye out for several species of wildlife including mule deer, black bear, peregrine falcons, bald eagles and bighorn sheep.

Portions of the drive are on narrow dirt road and may require a water crossing. From Tonasket, cross to the west of the Okanogan River, then head north on Highway 7 for 5.2 miles. Continue straight onto Loomis-Oroville Road for another 11.5 miles, then turn right to stay on this for another 2.1 miles. Turn left onto Toats Coulee Road for 1.4 miles, before turning right. Go 3.3 miles from this turn, then turn slight right for the Lower Chopaka Lake Road and go for about 3 more miles until reaching the lake.
