Hiking Chancellor

The Canyon Creek trail transitions into the Chancellor Trail just before the boundary of the Pasayten Wilderness. Walk along Canyon Creek as you make your way up close to the top of Center Mountain. Enjoy views of Jackita Ridge, Shull Mountain, and panoramic views of the rest of the Wilderness. Begin the trip through a burn area and end up in meadows along the ridge.

Begin your approach to Chancellor from the Canyon Creek Trailhead. Come readily prepared to do some route finding and boulder-scaling as a washout has deemed the trail impassable by the Forest Service. The trail from Mill Creek to Cedar Crossing is closed to hikers. Past this point, the trail is not maintained by the Forest Service, but is doable for prepared and experienced hikers.

The Chancellor trail begins just past Slate Creek. Walk along Canyon Creek and enjoy the water as you begin to climb. Carefully cross Cascade Creek. Waters may be high and flowing quickly in the spring and early summer. Immediately after the creek, gain significant elevation on a network of switchbacks that begin the climb up the side of Center Mountain. Again, the trail is not maintained at this point, and you will likely need to route-find.

Past the switchbacks, climb a bit more steadily up the side of Center Mountain. The trail curves around the side, but it is not much more elevation gain for hikers looking to summit. Past the mountain, the trail continues along the ridge towards Sky Pilot Pass, where it connects with the Devil's Ridge trail. Canyon Creek is below the ridge on the right, and follow the top of Jackita Ridge on the left.
