Hiking Buck Creek 2

Here's a low-key, gentle hike, clocking in at 3.2 miles roundtrip and weaving through old-growth firs, past a stream, and onto a summit within the first mile. After viewing Mount Adams and Mount Hood from this viewpoint, follow the trail by crossing a jeep track.

This leg of the hike takes you through a replanted forest of Ponderosa pines and hemlocks for a short way then the trail descends through a high canopy forest with sparse understory. It's 0.6 miles to the end.

At trail end is a forest service road and here you can walk 4/10ths of a mile north to the Monte Cristo Trail and up to the top of this overlook (or backtrack to the start).

If you're looking for other routes consider these connection points:
Monte Carlo: Starts at the same trailhead as Buck Creek Trail No. 2 and heads west.
Monte Cristo: Connects to Buck Creek No. 2 and heads north.
• Buck Creek No. 1: Connects to the mid-point of Buck Creek Trail No. 2 and heads north.
• Buck Creek Loop is a hike around Nestor Peak (8 miles).

Note on the trail names: The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) does not use numbers for trails. However, Buck Creek #1 & #2 are on DNR land; the numbers have been retained to reduce confusion.

The Buck Creek No. 1 trail intersects Buck Creek No. 2 mid way. A map is recommended if these names are confusing.

WTA Pro Tip: Save a copy of our directions before you leave! App-based driving directions aren't always accurate and data connections may be unreliable as you drive to the trailhead.

Getting There

Drive I-84 east to Exit 64 at Hood River, and cross the Columbia River to White Salmon (paying $2 at the toll booth). After crossing the bridge, turn left on Highway 14, heading west towards Stevenson and Vancouver. In 1.5 miles, turn right onto Highway 141 Alt. for Trout Lake and the Mount Adams Recreation Area. (Alternately, simply drive Highway 14 east to the junction for Highway 141 Alt to Trout Lake).

From the turnoff, drive 2.2 miles and turn left onto Highway 141 for BZ Corner, Trout Lake and Glenwood.  Drive another 2 miles and make a left turn onto Northwestern Lake Road (easy to miss).

Keep to this road for 0.4 miles and come to a four-way junction. Proceed straight on gravel Road B1000. Stay on B1000 road for 7.6 miles, winding up out of the Buck Creek valley, then turn right onto B1800 for Buck Creek Trailhead #2 (a sign for Buck Creek No. 2 is at the turn).

You’re almost there. Travel 1.5 miles to the trailhead (avoid all roads leading off to the left and right).  The parking area is wide and can accommodate 8 cars. The trailhead is at the parking area and a sign identifies this trail.
