Hiking Black & White Lakes

This beautiful loop hike takes you through a canopy of old-growth trees until you find yourself in a high alpine meadow with small quiet lakes. Yes it's gorgeous but this hike isn't easy.

The first few miles are pretty moderately graded until you reach Spike Camp. At the camp there will be a junction, turn right. The other way will be your route on the way back. Continue for a few more miles passing waterfalls and creeks.

Here, turn left to go to Black and White Lakes. (A right turn will take you to Flapjack Lakes). After the junction you're only 1.1 miles away from the lakes. Relax lakeside and enjoy the area. When you've enjoyed the beautiful lakes it's time to get moving again. There are two options for your return trip. You can go back the way you came, or you can take a more primitive route to make a loop.

For the loop options, look for an unmarked junction on the trail near the far end of the lake. At the junction, turn left and head steeply downhill. This trail is very primitive and you may need to bushwhack in some places - have pants to protect your legs.

Two miles later, when you rejoin the North Fork Skokomish Trail, turn left and head back down the trail to the parking area.

WTA Pro Tip: The primitive trail has no water available. Fill up at Black and White Lakes before you head back.

Getting There

From Hoodsport, just off of Highway 101, turn left onto SR 119. Drive a little more than nine miles where 119 'T's with FR 24. Turn left here. Drive 1.7 miles to where the pavement ends. The road continues as gravel and in 3.7 miles, arrive at a junction. Make a right here, and continue 1.2 miles to the Staircase Ranger Station. Look for the parking lot on your right, across from the campground.
