Hiking Badger Valley

The Badger Valley Trail is located in the NE corner of Olympic National Park. This trail starts at the Obstruction Point Trailhead and trends down into Badger Valley to end at Grand Lake.

Start out traversing steep open slopes for 0.3 miles on the Deer Ridge Trail before descending at a quicker clip on several switchbacks on the official Badger Valley Trail. The trail then levels off to traverse the slopes above the valley, following it downhill.

At the bottom, the route hangs a right and follows Grand Creek to Grand Lake, crossing the creek a couple times along the way. At Grand Lake you can continue on to two other lakes, Moose and Gladys, another mile farther.

The Badger Valley Trail officially ends at the outlet of Grand Lake. Hikers can turn around here and head back the way they came or return via the Grand Pass Trail on the Grand Valley Loop.

WTA Pro Tip: Save a copy of our directions before you leave! App-based driving directions aren't always accurate and data connections may be unreliable as you drive to the trailhead.

Getting There

From Port Angeles turn south on Race Street. Race becomes Hurricane Ridge Road. You will pass the Vistor Center where you can stop if you need an overnight permit. You can also borrow a bear bin from them. Continue straight, going through the park entrance where the fee booth is located, and wind up the the 17 miles to Hurricane Ridge.

The road to Obstruction Point leaves Hurricane Ridge Road, just before you arrive at the large parking lot for Hurricane Ridge. The turn is a sharp hairpin turn to your left. Obstruction Point Road is 7.6 miles of gravel, with some tight switchbacks, and is one-lane wide with pullouts. This is not a good road for trailers or RVs. Take it slow. Drive the road to its end at the Obstruction Point Trailhead.
