Hiking Appleway Trail

A Rail-to-Trail conversion through the heart of the Spokane Valley, the Appleway Trail provides a non-motorized option for traveling through town. The trail was built on the former site of the Milwaukee Railroad corridor, with trail paving work beginning in 2015 and completed in 2020.

The trail starts at the Appleway Ave./University Road intersection with a small parking lot and a CXT toilet. Additional parking lots are available where the trail crosses Pines Road, Best Road, and Tschshirley Road (with additional restrooms at all save Pines Road). The trail extends eastward 5.1 miles.

There are several necessary crossings of busy roads, but most have a dedicated crosswalk and some even have flashing lights to alert motorists to pedestrians. The trail runs parallel to busy streets through the heart of Spokane Valley and has an urban vibe, with the back parking lots of many Valley businesses located on the north side of the trail and housing developments/apartment complexes adjacent on the south side. There are numerous benches along the trail, along with dog sanitation stations to help all of the neighborhood dog walkers maintain the cleanliness of the pathway. The trail itself is a 6' wide paved path, but the old railroad corridor is much wider, offering the potential for more amenities. Future plans for the Appleway Trail include additional development to create a "linear park" that will boast playgrounds, outdoor exercise equipment, community gardens, and outdoor food vendors.
