Hiking Alki Trail

The Alki Trail is a traditional urban paved trail running from the Alki beaches on the west around Duwamish Head, down through the West Seattle industrial area ending just shy of the Duwamish Waterway and Harbor Island.

The trail runs past the original, now-burned Luna Park dock just off Duwamish head, the Seattle Statue of Liberty plaza, and provide beautiful views of Puget Sound, the Olympic mountains and Elliot Bay into downtown Seattle.  There is passenger ferry access to downtown from the Seacrest Park Ferry Dock.

The area has tremendous local history with the city founder's first camp on Sept 25th, 1851 along the west shore of Alki point. The remainder of the Denny party came on the Schooner Exact on Nov 13th to find a half built cabin and endless rain.

Some accounts have Seattle's namesake, Chief Sealth, walking right up the beach to meet the wet and exhausted settlers - what a sight that must have been.

Other Useful Info: Restrooms are available in season at Jack Block Park, Don Armeni Boat Ramp and Alki Beach.  Don't miss additional views from Jack Block and Joe Block parks at the location of an old rail barge transfer dock just east of the Salty's on Alki restaurant.

There are reasonably easy connections to the Duwamish Trail and West Seattle Bridge Trail on the east end and the Schmitz Preserve Park trails on the west end.
