Alger Alp (North Route)

Alger Alp is a short peak in the Chuckanut Mountains that is accessible year round. The North Route starts out at Squires Lake Park — a series of short trails along the lake also make for a great standalone adventure. The South Route starts off of Alger Cain Lake Road. 

From the parking area off Old Highway 99, walk a short 0.3 miles to the lake. At the first junction, take a righthand turn to head for the peak. After a short section, hikers will encounter the second fork in the trail — either head right to take the South Ridge Trail or continue straight for the Squires Lake Loop Trail.

The South Ridge Trail goes along an exposed ridge, whereas the alternative stays in the trees near the lake. After 0.3 miles, both trails will meet up and continue straight to exit the park as a segment of the Pacific Northwest Trail (A route that goes all the way from Puget Sound to Glacier National Park!).

Continue trending upwards along old logging roads — first 1340, then 1300, then 1000—to the overlook at the top. Enjoy unobstructed views of the Skagit Valley, Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound Islands from this perch before heading down.
