Hiking Alderbrook Nature Trails

This trail system is affiliated with the Alderbrook Resort & Spa in Union, but is open to the public. While the lower trailhead is more accessible (just off Highway 106 across from the resort), there is limited parking. Consider using the upper trailhead at the large gravel parking area opposite the Alderbrook Golf Course clubhouse.

Take a moment to appreciate the views down to the Hood Canal and across to the Olympic Range, then hike to Devil's Club Crossing and keep left toward Dogwood Ridge. This starts a clockwise loop that will get you the most mileage without covering too much of the same ground.

Stay left at each junction on the gently-rolling Dogwood Ridge trail, then cross a bridge over Dalby Creek (mostly dry) and down the Licorice Fern trail. Cross Thimbleberry Bridge at the lower trailhead and continue making lefts to take in the Viewpoint and Big Tree Loops. The Gathering Grove features a shelter, picnic tables, and an outhouse. Then it's all uphill on the Huckleberry Hillclimb trail along Alderbrook Creek (also mostly dry) back to the upper trailhead.

The trails are nicely forested with large Douglas firs, maples, and the occasional manzanita. The lower sections of trail have several interpretive signs to identify and describe the flora. Benches to rest are found in unexpected but welcome spots. The trails themselves are narrow but well maintained and not brushy, but do keep an eye out for Devil’s Club.

WTA Pro Tip: The clubhouse at Alderbrook Golf Course offers breakfast and pub fare at reasonable prices. Or pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at the small park near the upper trailhead.

Getting There

From Olympia take US 101 north to Hwy. 106 toward Union. At Alderbrook Resort & Spa turn southwest (away from the waterfront) on Beach Drive, which switchbacks steeply up a shy mile to a T-intersection with Country Club Drive.

Turn left, cross a speed bump, then turn left into the large gravel parking
area opposite the clubhouse.
